Warning: Waterproof Membrane Thickness Testing Cannot Use Ruler Tape!

Recently, the Licheng District Housing and Construction Bureau of Chongqing City reported a case of waterproof membrane thickness failing to meet standards: In a certain construction project, the designed thickness of the pre-fabricated reinforced waterproof membrane was 4.0mm, but on-site measurements showed only 3.0mm. According to the 'Construction Engineering Quality Management Regulations,' the construction unit was fined 2% of the contract value, amounting to RMB 48,000, and the project responsible person was also penalized accordingly. This case highlights the critical importance of standardization and accuracy in waterproof membrane thickness testing.

Inspection revealed that many sites still use vernier calipers or micrometer tapes—tools typically for metallic materials—for measuring waterproof membrane thickness. These tools not only easily lead to significant measurement errors but also directly violate national standards specifying testing methods for waterproof membranes.

01

Why can't ruler tape be used for measuring waterproof membrane thickness?

Ruler tapes are suitable for metallic materials like steel bars, but waterproof membranes are flexible materials with uneven surface pressure distribution. Using such tools results in noticeable measurement deviations. Therefore, a professional method applying uniform pressure across a consistent area must be used to ensure data comparability and accuracy.

02

What equipment should be used? Based on which standards?

For testing the thickness of 'bituminous waterproof membranes' and 'high molecular waterproof membranes', refer respectively to National Standards GB/T 328.4-2007 'Methods for Testing Building Waterproof Membranes – Part 4: Thickness and Unit Area Mass of Bituminous Waterproof Membranes' and GB/T 328.5-2007 'Methods for Testing Building Waterproof Membranes – Part 5: Thickness and Unit Area Mass of High Molecular Waterproof Membranes'. The standards clearly specify:Testing EquipmentRequirements include:Thickness accuracy up to 0.01mm; flat and smooth test surface with a diameter of 10mm; applying a uniform pressure of 20kPa to the membrane surface..

The equipment meeting these requirements isthickness gauge, commonly available in two types: bench-type and handheld. Among them, handheld models are more portable and better suited for on-site field use.

What is the correct testing method?

01
Sample Preparation

Cut a specimen at least 100mm wide along the width direction from the membrane sample.

02
Test Conditions

Testing is typically conducted under normal room temperature. When disputes arise, samples should be conditioned for no less than 20 hours at (23±2)°C before testing.

03
Testing Procedure

Ensure the test surface is clean and calibrate the instrument to zero. During measurement, slowly lower the thickness gauge to avoid impact or deformation. Place 10 evenly distributed measurement points along the width direction of the membrane (the outermost points should be at least 100mm from the edge), and record each thickness value.

04
Result Processing

Calculate the average of the 10 measured values and round to the nearest 0.1mm.

In addition, the mandatory national standard 'General Specification for Building and Municipal Engineering Waterproofing' (GB 55030-2022) has explicitly defined the minimum allowable thickness for waterproof membranes—thickness must not fall below either the design value or the national standard requirement.

In summary, construction sites must give high priority to self-inspection and quality control of waterproof membrane thickness. Strictly use qualified thickness gauges compliant with national standards for testing, avoiding measurement errors caused by improper tools or incorrect methods, thereby ensuring engineering quality and mitigating risks related to quality defects and penalties.
